Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found many other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
